T4 Slips and Payroll Year-End for Alberta Employers
T4 slips report each employee's income and deductions for the calendar year, and they're due to both the employee and the CRA by the end of February. Here's what employers need to have ready.
Payroll year-end isn't just producing the T4 — it's confirming the numbers behind it are right, since a correction after filing is more work than getting it right the first time.
What to confirm before issuing T4s:
- All pay periods for the year are processed and reconciled — no missing or duplicate runs.
- Source deductions (CPP, EI, income tax) match what was actually remitted through the year.
- Any taxable benefits, such as a vehicle allowance, are correctly included.
- Employee information — name, SIN, address — is current.
If payroll has been a spreadsheet exercise up to now, Payroll Services covers this end-to-end, including T4 preparation.
Filing T4s late carries its own penalty separate from any remittance penalties during the year, so this is worth starting in January, not the last week of February.
